Somali men from the Gulf of Aden were from an area vital to the British Empire, itwas the primary route from India, Zanzibar and other Asian/African Empire terrritories. British Somaliland and Aden were protected by Royal Marines so that the waterway remined open. Somali men from Berbera, Hargeisa and Aden worked at sea as British seaman. Despite receiving 25% less wages than `white' seaman it wwas a major career for Somali men.
